Towards green and more efficient dialysis

The hemodialysis therapy has enabled (sur-)vival with the diagnosis of chronic kidney failure for more than 60 years. This has been a blessing for all patients.

The global demand for treatment is increasing by around 5% annually. This means the high demand for resources is also increasing. From an economic, social and ecological point of view, we need to rethink things quickly. How can we make dialysis more sustainable? We call our solution "SMART DIALYSIS®".

SMART DIALYSIS® means intelligently combining and digitally networking our expertise in medical technology and green technologies. In this way, we help dialysis centres to reduce their operating costs. At the same time, electricity and water savings reduce the ecological footprint of dialysis. Resource requirements for dialysis

Haemodialysis treatments are energy-intensive and use a lot of precious drinking water. The carbon footprint is very large. This is exactly where we come in to make dialysis more sustainable and therefore "greener". to make.

Electricity

The daily electricity requirement of all German dialysis centres corresponds to the consumption of a city like Greifswald or Friedrichshafen with around 60,000 people. The annual costs for 120,000 MWh amount to €36 million¹. Despite the availability of technologies such as photovoltaic systems and heat pumps, only a few centres make use of these possibilities. We integrate cost-effective and sustainable decentralised energy generation into our GreenTec Cross-sector Integration.

Drinking water

In Germany, around 80,000 people are dependent on dialysis treatment three times a week. This requires up to 100 million litres of fresh drinking water every week². This is equivalent to the contents of 40 Olympic swimming pools. Drinking water is one of our most important resources and it is becoming increasingly scarce. All technical, medical and organisational options for saving drinking water must therefore be exploited.

CO₂

The vital dialysis treatment causes around 4.2 tonnes of CO₂³ per patient every year. By comparison, the average CO₂ emissions per person in Germany are 10.3 tonnes⁴ according to the Federal Environment Agency. This underlines the urgency of the sustainable transformation to green dialysis in all areas. The aim is to reduce the ecological impact of dialysis without compromising the quality of treatment for patients.
